Mission SHATAYU

Mission SHATAYU

A hundred healthy years, and beyond.

शतायुर्भव: may you live a hundred years. The blessing Indian elders have always given is now a mission.

The blessing in our name

Shata means a hundred. Ayu means life. SHATAYU is one who lives a hundred years, and the wish every grandparent in India has placed on a bowed head: शतायुर्भव.

The Vedic prayer जीवेम शरदः शतम् asks for a hundred autumns of seeing, knowing, growing and flourishing, and then for even more than a hundred. SHATAYU takes that prayer as a mission: to make a long life a healthy, purposeful and compassionate one, for every family, from the foothills of Kangra.

Mission SHATAYU is the healthy ageing initiative of VARISHTHA Bharat, the people's network of retired and senior citizens, where the idea was born. Its elders carry the mission into every panchayat, with AGEDCare India leading and EduCARE Dharamshala alongside.

The ancient map: four ashramas, and beyond

Our ancestors mapped a hundred-year life as four ashramas of twenty-five years each. Every stage had its own duty, and every stage was honoured.

  1. Brahmacharya ब्रह्मचर्य

    0 to 25

The student: learning, discipline, and building body and mind.

  2. Grihastha गृहस्थ

    25 to 50

The householder: family, work, and sustaining society.

  3. Vanaprastha वानप्रस्थ

    50 to 75

The elder in service: stepping back, guiding the young, handing on.

  4. Sannyasa संन्यास

    75 to 100

The seeker: detachment, reflection and wisdom.

  5. Beyond Shri Krishna's 125

    100 to 125

By the reckoning of the Bhagavata Purana, Shri Krishna walked this earth for 125 years. In our own tradition, the hundred was never a wall.

One journey, three maps

SHATAYU carries forward every way our civilisation, and now our science, has measured a full life.

Three doors, one mission

Five paths, one circle

The United Nations theme for the 2026 International Day of Older Persons is

The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives.

SHATAYU answers with a circle of five connected paths, each feeding the next.

The Horizon Principle

We welcome every advance that lengthens human life, and hold each to one test: does a longer life also make us more compassionate?

Our tradition names two kinds of wealth. Daivi sampat, the divine qualities, include fearlessness, non-harm, truthfulness and freedom from anger. Asuri sampat includes arrogance, pride, anger and harshness. Length of life does not decide which a person carries; self-mastery does.

A long life is a blessing. A long life guided by compassion is a gift to the world.

The ground we stand on

SHATAYU grows from a community network EduCARE has built across Kangra over many years.

The same people who keep villages safe in a disaster can keep elders safe, healthy and connected every day.
